Starting in 1919, Jim Cage began acquiring ranchland in Brooks County from the Lasater family. Since that time, his sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons have managed and worked on the ranch. Jim’s oldest son, Richard, managed the ranch until his death in 1988. Today the ranch is managed by Presnall Cage and his son Grady. Currently the ranch is owned by the families of Sharon Cage, Kathryn Cage Lutts, and Presnall Cage.
The ranch sits on the “sand sheet” of south Texas that is well known for its Live Oak trees and for having an outstanding Bobwhite Quail habitat. Over 50 percent of the ranch is made up of Live Oak Motts with elevations ranging from 110 to 360 feet above sea level.
Jim Cage started with a herd of Hereford cattle and was one of the first Texas cattlemen to ship calves via railroad to the Flint Hills of Kansas for growth. Today the ranch has a commercial cattle herd that consists mainly of crossbred Hereford cows bred to Hereford and Brangus bulls.
The ranch has various hunting leases for Bobwhite quail, Rio Grande Turkey, Whitetail Deer, Nilgai, Mourning Dove, and feral hog.
The ranch has memberships in Texas and Southwesten Cattle Raisers Association, Texas Wildlife Association, and South Texas Property Rights Association and supports the Ceasar Kleberg Wildlife Institute and Texas Christian University’s Ranch Management program.
